Villaverde Library

Madrid

2018 –

The library is determined by three factors; the site, its program as a library of the XXI century, and the desire to show a clear character of a public building that neutralizes the pressure of a high-rise-built environment. On its southern side, sheltered from traffic, a light pergola is projected providing a green enclosure that protects the nature classroom, the outdoor spaces for children, storytelling, etc … a greenhouse as a meeting place and coexistence.
The two-story library is much smaller in volume than the surrounding residential buildings. Its linear and compact shape, carved by its sloping roof, provides urban value to the three perimeter streets and uniqueness to the building that will be recognizable from the neighbourhood. The access from the new plaza with space for bicycles under a grove of almond trees will make the public space attractive and will favour the integration of the library into the urban environment.
